Veterans Healthcare System of the Ozarks Fires Pathologist

A pathologist at the Veterans Healthcare System of the Ozarks in Fayetteville was fired after an investigation revealed the pathologist worked while “impaired” and misdiagnosed patients.

Pathologists from around the state and region have volunteered to review the “impaired” pathologist’s cases dating back to 2005, including 5,250 cases involving patients who are now deceased. Reviewing the pathologist’s cases will take months, but 7 missed diagnoses have already been discovered and at least one death has resulted from the misdiagnoses. Nearly20,000 local veterans are at risk, and will receive notice via mail regarding their legal options and new medical information. The pathologist’s failures are far-reaching, with a veteran in Springfield, MO already receiving a letter from the V.A. hospital in Fayetteville regarding what may be a missed cancer diagnosis.
